Furnace Repair in Calgary

Emergency Furnace Repair in Calgary

When the furnace quits in the middle of a Calgary winter, Calgary Air Heating and Cooling Ltd is the call. We repair all major furnace brands, and a standard service call is $149. That covers a licensed technician coming to your home, finding the fault and giving you the price before any work starts.

Furnaces rarely fail at a convenient hour, which is why our emergency furnace repair runs through the heating season, including evenings and weekends. Our phones are answered from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, so you can talk the problem through with someone before deciding on a visit.

If you have no heat, call us at (403) 720-0003 and tell us what the furnace is doing: no flame, a blower that runs without heat, a blinking light on the control board or a furnace that starts and then shuts off. If you smell gas, leave the house first and make the call from outside.

After-Hours Furnace Service

During the heating season we take after-hours furnace calls in the evenings and on weekends. The after-hours service call is $289, compared with $149 during regular hours, and the parts prices further down this page apply either way. When you call, we will tell you how the schedule looks that day, so you can choose between an after-hours visit and the next regular appointment.

Plenty of no-heat calls turn out to be something simple, such as a furnace switch that was turned off by mistake, a thermostat with dead batteries or a filter so blocked that the furnace shuts itself down on a safety limit. It is worth checking those three things before you call, because they can save you the cost of a visit.

Repair and Maintenance Under One Roof

A lot of the repairs we make in January start as small problems that a tune-up would have caught in September, such as a dirty flame sensor, a worn igniter or a clogged condensate line. Our furnace maintenance and tune-up service is $149 for the first furnace and $99 for each extra unit on the same visit, and it is an inexpensive way to cut down on emergency calls.

Common Furnace Problems We Fix

Most furnace repairs in Calgary come down to a short list of parts. Knowing what each one does makes it easier to follow the diagnosis when the technician explains it.

No heat, or cold air from the vents. The usual suspects are the igniter and the flame sensor. An igniter that has cracked will not light the burners, and a dirty flame sensor lets the burners light and then shuts them off a few seconds later.

A furnace that starts and stops. Short cycling often points to a blocked filter, a dirty flame sensor or a limit switch tripping because the furnace is running too hot.

New or louder noises. Humming, squealing or rattling usually comes from the inducer motor or the blower motor, and both get worse the longer they run that way.

Blinking lights or a blower that never stops. These point to the control board, which also stores the error codes our technicians read during the diagnosis.

Burners that will not light, or a yellow flame. This can be the gas valve or, more seriously, the heat exchanger. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, turn the furnace off and get everyone out of the house before you call.

How a Repair Visit Works

The technician diagnoses the fault, explains it in plain terms and gives you the price before any work begins. You approve the repair first, and nothing gets added to the invoice afterward.

Furnace Repair Cost in Calgary

Most people want a number before they book. Here is what furnace repair actually costs with Calgary Air Heating and Cooling Ltd.

A service call is $149. That covers a licensed technician coming out and diagnosing the fault. After hours, evenings and weekends during heating season, the call is $289.

Furnace repairTypical cost
Diagnostic or service call$149
After-hours service call$289
Flame sensor$200 to $350
Igniter$250 to $450
Gas valve$500 to $900
Control board$500 to $1,200
Inducer motor$600 to $1,200
Blower motor$600 to $1,500
Heat exchanger$1,500 to $3,500 and up

These are typical ranges, not quotes. What moves the number is the equipment, the parts the job needs, and what the diagnosis turns up. The blower motor spread is the widest because a PSC motor and an ECM motor are different parts at different prices. Heat exchanger work depends on the model and on whether the part is still under warranty.

You get the price before the work starts. Nothing gets added to the invoice afterward.

Financing

Financing is available on larger work. Current furnace and heat pump rebates change from season to season, so call and ask what applies at the time rather than working from a number you read online.

Repair or Replace?

Past a certain point a repair stops making sense. A heat exchanger on a furnace that is already past 15 years is the usual example, because that repair can run $1,500 to $3,500 or more on equipment near the end of its working life. We will tell you when that is the case rather than sell you the repair, and we will say so just as plainly when a repair is the better value.

If replacement is the right call, our furnace replacement and installation page covers what is involved and how a new unit goes in. A new furnace, installed, typically runs $5,000 to $8,000, and quotes on new installations are free.

Warranty on New Furnaces

New furnaces come with a 10-year parts warranty once the unit is registered, plus a 1-year labour warranty on the installation. There is an optional 10-year labour warranty available where the system gets annual maintenance through Calgary Air at $149 a year, and that coverage transfers if you sell the house.

Furnace Repair Questions From Calgary Homeowners

What should I do if my furnace stops working at night?

Check the thermostat, the furnace switch and the filter first, since any of the three can shut the heat off. If those look fine, call us at (403) 720-0003. Our phones are answered from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, and through the heating season we take after-hours calls in the evenings and on weekends at $289. If you smell gas, leave the house and call from outside.

How often should I replace my furnace filter?

Every one to three months for a standard one inch filter, and sooner in a home with pets or during renovations. A blocked filter restricts airflow and makes the furnace work harder, which shows up first as higher bills and eventually as a repair. Filters are checked and replaced as part of the annual tune-up.

What are the signs that I need furnace repair?

Common signs include unusual noises from the furnace, rooms that never get warm, a furnace that keeps turning on and off, a jump in your gas bill and a yellow burner flame instead of a blue one. If you notice any of these, it is worth booking a service call before a small fault turns into a no-heat call in the middle of a cold snap.

How do regular furnace tune-ups help?

A yearly tune-up keeps the furnace running efficiently, helps it last longer and catches worn parts before they fail. Routine maintenance also gives the technician a chance to check the safeties, the venting and the burner flame while the furnace is still working, which is a lot easier than finding the same problem on a cold night.

What should I look for in a furnace repair company?

Look for a company that is licensed and insured, publishes its service call price, gives you the repair price before the work starts and takes after-hours calls in heating season. Reviews from other homeowners help too, and so does a company that can look after maintenance as well as repairs, so the same people know your furnace from one year to the next.

Are furnace protection plans worth it?

The part of any plan that does the real work is the yearly tune-up. For a new furnace installed by Calgary Air, annual maintenance at $149 a year also keeps the optional 10-year labour warranty in force, and that coverage transfers if you sell the house. For an older furnace, booking the tune-up each fall gets you most of the same benefit.

Do you repair all furnace brands?

Yes. We repair and maintain all major furnace brands, whether we installed the unit or not.

Do you also work on air conditioners?

Yes. We repair, maintain and install central air conditioning, so the furnace and the air conditioner that shares its blower can be looked after by one company.

Calgary Air Heating and Cooling Ltd is a licensed and insured, 100% Canadian company with transparent pricing and no hidden fees. If your furnace is acting up, call us or send a message and we will take it from there.
