Four things move the ac installation cost.
Home size. Calgary Air sizes every unit on the quote visit. 1,500 square feet typically calls for 2.5 tons. Push closer to 2,100 and you are looking at a 3-ton air conditioner. Get that wrong in either direction and you lose money. Undersized units run hard and cannot catch up. Oversized short-cycles and wastes power.
SEER2 rating. Higher efficiency units cost more upfront but less to run monthly. Entry-level is 13.4 SEER2. Premium units push into 17 and above.
Ductwork condition. Ducts in good shape keep the job straightforward. If there are leaks or the ducts are undersized, that adds to the total. Calgary Air flags any ductwork issues during the free quote visit, so nothing comes up as a surprise later.
Brand. Lennox, Carrier, Trane carry a premium over builder-grade units. That premium tends to pay back over the life of the air conditioner, since quality units last longer and require fewer repairs.
Equipment. Labour. Refrigerant charge. Thermostat connection. Full system test. That is a standard air conditioning installation. Nothing added on top without your approval.
Where the bill can grow: electrical service upgrade if the panel is undersized, ductwork modifications if airflow needs correcting, concrete pad if the outdoor unit needs one. Each of those gets quoted separately. The number is confirmed before work starts.
13.4 SEER2 on the low end. Installed, that is roughly $3,500 to $5,900. Something in the 15 to 16 SEER2 range means $5,900 to $8,500 instead. Above 17 SEER2, the numbers still climb past that.
Higher-rated unit costs more upfront. Over a 15-year lifespan, however, the lower monthly bills typically cover the gap. That math changes if the air conditioner is not maintained. Regular AC maintenance also keeps efficiency from slipping and extends how long the unit runs well.
Replacement runs roughly the same as a new air conditioning installation. There is a flat charge to drain and remove the old unit, but it does not shift the total much. When ductwork is already in place and in reasonable condition, the scope stays similar to a standard new install.
